What Can I Expect

Preparation

While preparing for your MRI exam, eat and drink anything you normally would and be sure to take your prescribed medications.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal fasteners or zippers. As a patient, you will be asked
to remove jewelry, dentures, glasses, hairpins, watch, belt, and body piercing(s). You will be given a patient locker for these items, as well as for your wallet or purse.

Precautions

MRI is a non-invasive test that has no biological effects to patients. MR works with a strong magnet & radio frequency waves. There are several implanted items that may not be compatible with the magnet. Please notify our staff if you have any of the following implanted items:
  • Aneurysm Clip(s)
  • Cardiac Pacemaker
  • Implanted Cardio Defibrillator (ICD)
  • Electronic Implants or Devices
  • Neurostimulator
  • Spinal Cord Stimulator
  • Cochlear Ear Implant or Implanted Hearing Aid
  • Insulin or (Drug) Infusion Pump
  • Prosthesis or Artificial Limb
  • Metal Fragments or Foreign Body (including gun shot or shrapnel wounds)

Oral Sedation

Clarkston MRI does not provide oral sedation for your exam. If you suffer from claustrophobia, or feel the need for oral sedation, please call the ordering physician to discuss the possibility of a sedative. If the patient takes an oral sedative prior to the MRI, a driver will need to bring the patient to and from their appointment. The staff of Clarkston MRI cannot direct on how or when to take the sedation. Please call your pharmacist or physician to answer any sedation questions.

How long does an MRI take?

Most MRI imaging takes about a half an hour in length. Depending on the scan, some exams can take up to 60 minutes.

When should I expect results?

Your test results will be faxed or mailed from Clarkston MRI to the ordering physician within 3 business days of your exam.
